Le Cadre Noir, Saumur — A Deep Dive
The Cadre Noir at Saumur is France's national equestrian academy and the principal carrier of the École de Saumur classical dressage tradition. Founded in 1825 as a military cavalry school and reorganised as a civilian academy in 1972, it occupies a vast modern campus at the École Nationale d'Équitation outside the medieval town of Saumur in the Loire valley.
History
The Cadre Noir grew out of the cavalry school established at Saumur in 1814 after the Napoleonic wars. Its name derives from the black uniform of its écuyers.
