Palio di Siena — A Deep Dive
The Palio di Siena is the world's most famous bareback horse race — a 90-second, three-lap sprint around the dirt-covered Piazza del Campo in Siena, held twice every summer. The race, dating to at least the 17th century, is the focal point of the city's contrade (district) culture.
History
Documented from 1238; modern format since 1656. Two annual races: 2 July (Palio di Provenzano) and 16 August (Palio dell'Assunta).
Contrade
Siena is divided into 17 contrade or districts. Ten contrade participate in each Palio; selection rotates.
The race
Three laps of the Campo (about 90 seconds total). Bareback. Brutal and dangerous.
Horses
Mostly mixed-breed and accessible horses, not thoroughbreds. Horses are assigned to contrade by lottery.
Jockeys
Hired riders from outside Siena. Bribery and conspiracy among contrade are part of the culture.
Trial races
Six trial races (prove) lead up to the Palio. The morning of the race, a final mass and parade ('Corteo Storico').
Spectator areas
Free standing room in the centre of the Campo holds tens of thousands. Paid seating from balconies around the square.
Tickets
Standing room free; balcony tickets via private rental — book months ahead via local agencies.
The Drappellone
The painted silk banner — the prize given to the winning contrada — is created by a different artist each year.
Cultural depth
Contrade are lifelong identities; members are born and baptised contrada. The Palio is the focal point but daily life is contrada-organised.
Visiting outside Palio
Siena is worth visiting year-round for its UNESCO old town, Duomo, Campo, and museums.
Animal welfare debate
Critics object to horse safety. Authorities have implemented welfare reforms since 2000s.
