Top 10 Riding Spots in Romania

Romania has some of Europe's last genuinely wild riding country. The Carpathian mountains harbour bear, wolf, and lynx; the Saxon villages of Transylvania preserve a working horse culture; and the Hutsul pony is the indigenous Carpathian breed. The country offers exceptional value compared to Western Europe. All centres on the map.

1. Transylvania Saxon Villages

The Saxon villages around Sighișoara, Viscri, and Saschiz are a UNESCO landscape of fortified-church villages. Equus Silvania and other operators run multi-day rides linking villages. April-November.

2. Apuseni Mountains

The Apuseni in western Transylvania offer multi-day pack rides through karst caves and forest. Less known than the eastern Carpathians. May-October.

3. Făgăraș Mountains

The Făgăraș range — Romania's highest — offers serious mountain riding for experienced riders. Pack rides ascend to 2,000+ m on horseback. June-September.

4. Bucovina

Northern Bucovina's painted monasteries and rolling forest country offer cultural-plus-riding programmes. May-October.

5. Maramureș

Northern Maramureș on the Ukrainian border preserves wooden churches and a traditional rural culture. Quiet trail riding through villages. April-October.

6. Danube Delta

Riding in the Danube delta wetlands is limited but available; specialist operators only. April-October.

7. Hutsul Centre, Lucina

The Lucina national stud preserves the Hutsul pony. Visits and rides for breed enthusiasts. May-October.

8. Piatra Craiului

The Piatra Craiului national park offers limestone-ridge riding near Brașov. June-September.

9. Retezat Mountains

The Retezat range — Romania's first national park — has rugged trail terrain and bears. Specialist operators. June-September.

10. Sibiu Region

The hills around Sibiu offer accessible mid-range trail riding with cultural day trips to Sibiu itself. April-October.

The Hutsul pony

The Hutsul is the small mountain pony of the Carpathians — sure-footed, hardy, used historically by Carpathian shepherds. Lucina is the main Romanian preservation centre.

Carpathian wildlife

Romania has Europe's largest bear, wolf, and lynx populations outside Russia. Reputable operators understand wildlife protocols and route choice; encounters are rare but real.

Booking and value

Romanian horse trips are substantially cheaper than Western European equivalents at equivalent quality. Equus Silvania, Cross Country Farm, and Sibiel-Salaşte-Bârcaciu are among the best-known operators. Book months ahead in summer.
